Two months into his two-year sentence, Plaxico Burress, former star wide receiver who used to play Super Bowl in New York Giants jersey, is trying to get a break from prison, but he may not succeed as prosecutors is trying to block his bid.
Sentenced in September for carrying an unlicensed gun that went off and wounded him at a Manhattan nightclub, Burress applied for a work furlough on Nov. 25. But Prosecutors said he has not served enough time and a quick furlough would send “a very bad message.” Besides, statistics shows that only less than 5 percent of the more than 31,500 work release applications statewide were granted last year and Burress is very unlikely to have the break he wants.
State prison system officials are expected to decide on his request next month. Burress is eligible for work release, but officials will make decision after weighing factors including inmate’s crime, his prison behavior and any opposition to the release.
