Lions QB Stafford had successful surgery

The Detroit Lions rookie quarterback Matthew Stafford underwent a successful surgery on his right knee Tuesday. The Lions called the surgery just a minor one, but it was important enough to force them to put the No. 1 quarterback on injured reserve before the season finale.

Stafford was put on IR list last week after a physical exam revealed he wouldn’t be ready to play in this Sunday’s season finale against the Chicago Bears.

In his first season of playing football in NFL jersey, Stafford completed 201 of 377 passes for 2,267 yards with 13 touchdowns and 20 interceptions this season. Starting totally ten games, he either threw or ran for a touchdown in each of the starts, including one pass in the Lions’ 19-14 win over the Washington Redskins in Week 3. That win was significant as the Lions’ first win of the season as well as the end of the team’s 19-game losing streak, the NFL’s second longest.
