Playing cornerback in the Kansas City Chiefs jersey from 1966 to 1978, Emmitt Thomas returned to Kansas more than 20 years after he retired from the Chiefs. His new job with the team is defensive backs coach.
He is going to work with Bernie Parmalee, who was signed by the Chiefs to be tight ends coach, and Otis Smith, who was added as head of defensive quality control.
As a five-time Pro Bowler, Thomas was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2008. He was among the Kansas City Super Bowl teams in the late 1960s and set a franchise record of 58 interceptions, which is still the team’s all-time record.
Since retirement, Thomas has become an experienced coaching staff. He worked for the Atlanta Falcons as an assistant coach for the last eight years, being the team’s interim head coach for the final three games in 2007. Before the job with Falcons, he also used to work as defensive coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings, Green Bay Packers and Philadelphia Eagles.
