Lions coach wants to see more of starting quarterback competitors

When the Detroit Lions coach Jim Schwartz said that Matthew Stafford would start the Saturday night's preseason game at Cleveland, do not take it as that he had made decision on the starter. In his remarks, the word “start” was actually replaced by the word “begin”.

“Well, there’s still a lot more to go, and that’s the deal," Schwartz said. "It’s a body of work. It’s not what you’ve done in one practice; it’s not what you have done in one preseason game. It’s going to be a body of work.”

So the competition between Stafford and Daunte Culpepper will still continue. The No. 1 overall draft pick last April and the 11th-year NFL veteran remain working hard to win the job.

Schwartz’s play for Saturday’s game is still to rotate between the two contenders. He will have Stafford “begin” the game and play into the second quarter of the game. Then Culpepper and Drew Stanton follow and play to the end.
