The Philadelphia Eagles will worry less than other teams about lack of players as they have now 22 players signed through 2012 and beyond after signing a six-year contract extension with tight end Brent Celek, who will thus continue to play in Eagles jersey though 2016 season.
The move was made just one week after the Eagles gave right tackle Winston Justice a four-year contract extension. As general manager Tom Heckert said, “It’s nice to have basically your core group of guys locked up one way or another and not have to go out into free agency or the draft saying, ‘We need this position, We need that position.”
What brought the Eagles to give Celek the extension? On-field performance, of course. In his first full season as a starter, Celek has become one of the top players at tight end position, tying for seventh in receptions (54), fifth in yards (601), and fourth in touchdowns (5) among all NFL tight ends.
Since being picked out of Cincinnati in 2007 in fifth round, Celek has had 97 catches for 1,097 yards and seven TDs in 43 career games, and is now leading the Eagles in catches and TDs.
