Saints’ win helps wash away tough times in New Orleans

Many fans wearing black and gold New Orleans Saints jerseys walked out of the Miami Sun Life Stadium in ecstasy, planning to have the greatest time of their life somewhere to celebrate the long-awaited victory. Saints beat the Indianapolis Colts, winning their first Super Bowl championship, and the New Orleans saw a brighter future.

“This is the best feeling since Katrina,” Saints fan Peggy Byrd said. “I can’t believe it. We knew what a good team we had.” The 56-year-old fan, like all other others, believed that the Saints could win the big game. She and her husband lost all their possessions in Hurricane Katrina, even their wedding photos. Such a victory no doubt works better than anything else as a relief.

Many have their own stories about supporting Saints. Byrd got a notarized contract with her boss in 1979 ruling that he would pay her way if the Saints ever made it to the Super Bowl. Well, he eventually paid for both Byrd and her husband. 21-year-old Ezra Azizo came from New York to Miami for the game. Her original home was in New Orleans but she had to move after Katrina. A student at Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City, he dropped a class to get a refund and use the money to come to Miami to watch the Saints.

Different fans expressed their feeling in different ways, and 43-year-old Thomas Krefft from Slidell, La. had one sentence to sum all them up: “We just walked out of heaven, baby.”
